At a glance you might think I was too lazy to sort the leather carefully — but in fact it is the opposite: this is a deliberate choice.

Natural grain, not a defect

Full-grain leather (leather that still keeps its original top surface layer) always has a few vein lines or small marks from the real life of the animal. That is not a defect — it is just the trace of a real animal that once lived, not something born from a plastic mould.

It is worth distinguishing clearly to avoid misunderstanding: natural grain is entirely different from real defects in a hide. Deep cuts, insect bite holes, scars that go through the grain layer — those are still rejected outright when choosing leather; having a mark does not mean it gets kept. Natural grain is just faint, shallow lines on the surface that do not affect durability. Look a little closely and you can tell them apart right away, no need to be a long-time craftsman.

Leather that has been heavily processed, sanded flat and evenly sprayed with colour does look “cleaner”. But that processing layer also covers the real leather texture underneath — two hides of the same type look exactly alike, losing the very thing that tells you which hide came from which animal.

— two different natural leather colours on the same bag model —

Hand stitching is more even than machine stitching — and not by luck

The saddle stitch is planned on the pattern according to the exact punching pitch right from the design stage. Sitting and punching each hole along a pre-calculated pitch takes much more time than feeding it straight into a sewing machine, but in exchange, when you reach a right angle you know for certain the needle will land in the right place.

An industrial sewing machine is the opposite: its stitch length is mechanically fixed and cannot adjust itself. When you reach the exact corner to turn direction, the last stitch rarely lands in the ideal position, and it is easy to crowd stitches or break the rhythm right at that point. It sounds a bit counterintuitive, but this is exactly where the machine has a harder time than the hand, nothing else.

What makes two hand-stitched pieces never exactly alike, even when made by the same person, is not that the stitching is less even — it is that no two times does a human hand repeat a movement exactly the same way, as a machine does.

— waxed thread, edge skiving knife, burnishing wax — commonly used hand-stitching tools —

Wabi-sabi, in short

The Japanese have a concept that describes this quite accurately: Wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection. I do not follow that philosophy fully as a guiding principle for life, but after sitting and punching leather all session, every now and then I do feel exactly that spirit of “accepting imperfection” — in a very practical way, not because of some lofty enlightenment.

Choose according to your needs

Need a uniform surface, identical from one product to the next? Heavily processed leather and machine stitching are still much more suitable. But if you do not mind a few natural grain lines, and you like the idea that the item you use has no second copy, then that is the most genuine part of a handmade item.

The natural grain on full-grain leather is completely different from real defects in a hide.
